Meet the team involved
Project Scaffold was born over many conversations between Syd Eckley and Rob Jones, wanting to find solutions to the many challenges facing the long-term care sector. true2you joined the team in 2021. We all believe the sector has the potential to find better options and solutions when we share and have conversations about what is most important to us all – the dignity and wellbeing of older individuals in a sustainable sector.

Syd has an extensive background of more than 40 years in the field of gerontology. His experience covers a career as a professional social worker, an academic, researcher, policy maker, human rights activist and counsellor. Committee member of the SA Human Rights Commission dealing with challenges facing older persons.
Shire Retirement Properties
About Us
Founded in 2010 by Rob Jones in response to a clear need in the South African retirement industry for specialist independent consultants, Shire Retirement Properties is focused exclusively on the retirement industry. Shire provides a unique service to the industry through hands-on and dedicated advice and support, sometimes over several years as villages develop and become fully operational.
The Shire organisation takes shape around the requirements of clients and their projects. Shire works closely with a select group of partners from various professions, who are employed on an independent contract basis as required.
About Rob
Having made a successful transition from the world of electrical engineering to management and consulting, for the past 12 years, Rob has dedicated his time and energy to finding solutions to living environment challenges in the retirement industry.
He works closely with developers, operators and owners to design, implement, market and operate villages and Care Centres throughout South Africa. Rob owns his own consultancy (Shire Retirement Properties) and serves on the boards of various organisations (both for-profit and nonprofit) in the sector. Rob holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from The University of Stellenbosch and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Henley Management College, London.

About Magda:
An occupational therapist by training. Now spending her days passionately helping others consider and explore various options, to reach the goal of – making a positive difference in the lives of older individuals -, while acknowledging everyone that contribute to the long-term care community in South Africa and beyond.
Project Participants
So far, 18 organisations have taken the step to review and take stock of the current status quo in long term care in South Africa. They have committed to revise and re-invisage not only what is on offer, but how it will be delivered:
Pilot participants
Huis Herfsblaar Retirement Village is located in Queenswood, the tree lined residential area in Pretoria.
The village offers accommodation with 175 flats, 69 town houses as well as a care centre.
The 175-bed care centre offers 24-hour full care by nursing as well as care staff who form part of the multidisciplinary team.
Huis Herfsblaar also has a sub-acute unit, Herfsmed, that offers rehabilitation, post-operative, and palliative/end of life care.
We offer quality care and accommodation as the dignity and privacy of all are highly regarded. The privilege to share in friendships between residents helps to combat loneliness.

Medwell SA focus on the principle of “Managed Home Nursing Care”, which ensures that the primary care of Medwell SA patients is continuous from Hospital/Rehab/Sub Acute to home. This guarantees that there is no interruption in the recovery process of the patient. Medwell SA works in conjunction with all relevant disciplines (GP’s, Specialists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social workers etc.) to form a multi-disciplinary team. Together we assess the medical history of the patient and provide relevant input to determine the Care Plan prescribed to our patients.
