Sick while on annual leave

Hello colleagues, 

 

There is a grey area which I needed some clarity on. What is the organisationas policy on converting annual leave to sick leave when the staff care partner gets ill while on annual leave? While there is an absolute need to be mindful of the circumstances of the care partners, there is also a need to mitigate against risk of abuse of this provision. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi Femada.  Leaving aside the law, I would personally allow conversion of annual leave to sick leave if there is a verifiable certificate from a doctor.  Getting a verifiable certificate is sometimes a challenge, but perhaps getting the staff member to get one from a source that you are happy with is a good compromise for both parties.  If the staff member balks at verification, it is often a sign of misuse of sick leave.  In some areas, staff view sick leave as a right and they max it out regardless of their health (which is risky).
