Respecting Tradition, Navigating Impact: A Reflection on Cultural Inclusion in the Workplace
In any diverse workplace, we are often gifted opportunities to learn from one another’s journeys—especially when those journeys involve deeply personal, spiritual, or cultural transitions. Recently, a staff member within our organisation began an important phase in their journey of traditional initiation—a sacred and significant transition within the realm of traditional healing.
This presented us with a moment of reflection and learning as an organisation. While we unequivocally support the right of every person to honour their cultural and spiritual identity, we also had to pause and consider the impact such practices may have in a shared workspace. For some staff members, the visible and sensory aspects of this transition evoked discomfort or confusion—not out of malice, but from a place of unfamiliarity.
The situation called for careful consideration:
-
How do we affirm and uphold the rights of one, without alienating or disregarding the experiences of others?
-
How do we approach discomfort with empathy rather than judgment?
-
And perhaps most importantly, how do we create a space where difference is not just tolerated, but embraced?
We engaged in open conversations with the staff involved, seeking to understand both the significance of the practice and the reactions it stirred. What emerged was not just a way forward in this particular instance—but a shared commitment to growth, understanding, and mutual respect.
This experience has reminded us that inclusion is not passive—it requires curiosity, courage, and humility. It requires confronting our own biases and stereotypes, and being open to learning about practices that may fall outside our personal or cultural frames of reference.
Moving forward, we aim to:
-
Foster environments for open dialogue around cultural identity
-
Provide context and education where needed to reduce stigma and fear
-
Develop respectful and inclusive ways to support diverse practices while maintaining harmony within the team
We will not always get it right. But when we approach each situation with honesty, empathy, and a willingness to learn, we take one more step towards a truly inclusive workplace—one where every person can belong, contribute, and grow.
Magda has always said "words make worlds" and I certainly got a sense of how the wrong words can take you down a path of discomfort and distrust.
